4 Signs You Need Timing Belt Replacement
We’ve previously discussed air conditioning repair and noticed that other issues will arise in your car and truck. Below, we will share the signs you need a timing belt replacement for your vehicle. You do not want to wait for the timming belt to break, as in many cases it is cheaper to replace than repair.
1. Strange Noises
One of the most common signs of a failing is strange noises coming from the engine. Chirping or squealing noises are the most common. They can indicate a loose or damaged belt. You may also have a possible oil or fluid leakage. Does the sound only occur when the air conditioner or heater is on? They may use a belt too, so be sure to have them checked as well.
2. Visual Inspection
You should have your belts and hoses inspected with each oil change. You may able to see damage to the hoses yourself when you pop the hood. These include cracks or “vein” looks in your hoses or belts. However, there are many hoses and belts not accessible to the eye without poking around, which is why a professional should conduct a visual inspection.
3. Fluid Leaks
Notice grimy spots on your garage floor under your vehicle? A loose or broken hose may be the issue. A leaking fluid like oil can come from anywhere but is most likely coming from the pan or a failing gasket. However, an anti-freeze leak can often be coming from the several hoses attached to it.
4. New Timing Belt Replacement Benefits
Timing belts are essential to a car’s operation. It can be expensive to change. Change it too soon, you waste money. Change it too late, you waste even more money fixing the damage to the pistons, unless your car has a non-interference engine. Here are some signs to help you know if you need timing belt replacement:
- Mileage – Most cars that use a timing belt need a replacement at every 80k miles.
- Check your owner’s manual for when your vehicle is recommended to have it replaced.
- Those of you who don’t put on 80k miles in a normal amount of time should have the belt changed every five to ten years, depending on make and model.
- Some cars use a timing chain that can last for the life of the car with good maintenance.
- Inspection is one of the best ways to tell if your timing belt needs replacement. A visual inspection requires removing a few components and inspecting the belt for cracks and other signs of damage.
